Charlottesville, VA - 10/13/2000 - Trax
By Dan Leone

As I expected, an excellent show. Actually, this was my first Sunny Day
Real Estate show and I've got nothing but a desire to see more. The band
gave 110% as I'm told they do each time they play. Anyway, into the
specifics:

Even before the show started, my friends and I sat outside, listening to
Sunny Day practice. We caught the beginning and middle parts of Rodeo Jones,
but the band decided not to play it that night. William later told my friend
Eric that they "weren't up to it" that night. No complaints from me, but
Eric had begged the band the night before (at Norva in Norfolk, VA) to play
it so he was a bit upset. We also heard them play Killed By An Angel all the
way through. Each band member approached the front door at least once and
tried (without success) to gain entry before the fans directed them to a side
door. Jeremy and William were also seen lounging around Charlottesville
before the show. The doors opened at nine.
I had a rather good vantage point directly in front of Dan and just to
Jeremy's right. I was pressed up against the guardrail and probably no more
than five feet away from Dan and Jeremy. Before the set began and before the
set lists were even put out, a roadie brought out Jeremy's acoustic,
signaling that the band was going to play Ocean. I was excited to say the
least. After an excellent opening set from Euphone, Sunny Day came out to a
raucous round of applause. The band opened up with Pheurton Skeutro and ran
the gamut from there with plenty of stuff off of "How It Feels To Be
Something On." Song About an Angel and Seven(!!) were played from Diary and
the band closed out an excellent set with The Rising Tide. Some memorable
moments:

A guy next to me yelled out something about "Sunny Day Real Estate and Puppet
Master tour!" to which William Goldsmith replied "We were just talking about
that the other day!"

Dan had to take a bathroom break. Jeremy explained this to everyone and got
a laugh for it. When Dan returned, I asked "everything pass through ok?" to
which he responded "now, now." I guess everything was fine, because he
played the rest of the set without a hitch.

Dan also commented on how good the crowd was. He asked if SDRE had ever been
to Charlottesville before. The crowd answered no. Dan then said that they'd
have to come back. Lots of cheering. I suggested they come back the next
day. Dan then said "ok, next show, tomorrow night, this dude's basement."
It made me wish I had a basement for them to play in.

After the show, the band hung around the venue to talk to the fans / catch
their breath. Jeremy gave out some signatures and answered some questions
for everyone, namely the origin of the Star on "How it Feels to be Something
On" and how the fly came to be Sunny Day's mascot. Jeremy also confirmed
what Dan said earlier about the great crowd.

On a scale of 1 to 5, this show gets an overwhelming 5. Perhaps the best
live performance I've personally seen to date. The venue was small, but all
that more personal.
