the rising tide
august 1st, 2000 is
day i will NEVER forget. it was the day i was waiting for
ever since we bought our tickets. the weather was mild w/ a cool breeze (the
weather has a great impact on me.) it was around sevenish when my husband,
matt bauer and i arrived @ the paradigm. there were about 20 or so emo-rock
kids lined up by the door. i was worried because i really wanted to be in
the
front row..but i told my self no matter where i stand it will still be a
great show. around 8:30 they opened the doors..luckily for me the group of
people in front of us bought their tickets on line so they weren't able to
"rush right in"...as soon as i got my hand "paisley" stamped,
i walked
through that familiar hall and there was the stage. i walked, hell it could
have been running i was so excited, right up to the front-dead center! i had
the best "seat" in the house! around 9:15 no knife played. and you
know,
EVERYONE said they sucked but i really thought that they were good (heck my
husband liked them so much that he bought their cd) the lead singer reminded
me of dr. evil's son on austin powers. but for anyone who hasn't seen them
yet w/ sdre-go in w/ an open mind. after they played, they started to set
up
for sunny day. i was kind-of unsure of where i was standing cause the lead
singer for no knife was at my far left-but i reassured myself i'd enjoy
myself regardless where jeremy was.-but i looked up and there was jeremy's
mike-inches away from me. i was smitten-i looked at my husband with
excitement. i've met him before and was up front at the instore performance,
but this was different. when sdre arrive on stage, the crowd roared!! i was
enthralled there was jeremy, inches away from me. his head was shaven and
he
was sporting a beard. he was wearing a white shirt and his neatly cuffed
brown polyester pants glimmered in the orange lights. (which shone directly
on me and made me feel as if i were in a rotisserie) first they played fool
in the photograph, and the rest followed. i really didn't have too much
disappointment in the set list cause they ARE promoting the rising tide, you
can't expect much older stuff. but i was so happy to hear guitar and video
games. when he sings he teeters back and forth from left to right of the
mike. and as the song intensified he pounds the chords on his guitar and the
emotion pours over into the crowd, engulfs them., and takes them away. it
was
very enchanting. and might i add-jeremy "rocked" so hard last night.
i have
never seen him like that before..so full of energy-it was great!!! and they
all seemed so comfortable. through out the show as jeremy sang, occasionally
i got spit and sweated on. after awhile i didn't care. they played 3 song
for
an encore, but still the crowd protested. deep sown it did look like they
wanted to play more. (dan even said that the portland crowd is always the
best and he wishes that we were all at the next seattle show) after the show
i jumped up and reached to grab jeremy's set list that he sweated all
over-ewww i know but also cool at the same time! after the show, matt and
i
waited to meet them again there was around 8-15 people also waiting. it
wasn't long before jeremy walked up to the gate-yes, there was a GATE between
us. he was kind enough o answer questions and sign stuff-but lo and behold
dan walked up and unlocked the gate! i got another picture with jeremy and
everyone asked questions- he talked about the contract with time bomb-they
have a SEVEN record deal, but, he is so funny, he said that if they were to
break up they wouldn't have to pay them anything. but he reinsured us that
he's very happy and he really would like to see sdre fulfill the contract
w/
time bomb. and he also mentioned that they are practicing songs from diary
to
play on the next tour!! dan also said he's written a book of four short
stories that will be illustrated by chris thompson-i'm totally looking
forward for that!!! and before dan left we got our picture taken with him.
on
our way out we ran in to jeremy again-this was a grand moment, all of my
sunny day real estate dream were coming true-my husband and i talked with
him-i mean REALLY talked with him! we asked him if he was going to do another
solo album and he said yes probably-and them we asked if he would tour for
it
and he said no he really wants to concentrate on sunny day. he wants to put
all his energy into it and he'd like to keep he's music for himself and not
out there for "public ridicule" he'd like it to stay "pure"
and i told him
that his words are so beautiful and that i've always thought that he should
write a book of poetry or something. and he told me that he really doesn't
express him self through the words, but through the music. he said music
always comes first and he said he's never really considered him self a
writer, he said that dan does a lot of the writing too for sdre (i also
commented on how i thought that dan was a great writer also)-he said that
when you write it's hard to find the right words and choice of words and
trying to use big words so you don't sound stupid (and while he was saying
this i was incomplete ewe that he was sharing this with matt and i) and what
he told us next i will NEVER EVER forget. he told matt and i about this story
that he wrote about lying by a tree and the tree started talking to him and
they started to have a conversation and birds flew by and swooped down to
see
what all the commotion was about. i thought it was soo sweet; i just couldn't
believe i was about to hear it.this was something that i have only dreamt
about-conversing with jeremy enigk. it was a very enchanted evening that i
did not want to end-this is something i will never ever forget

the last show i saw
before they turned la luna into a milk and juice bar was
sunny day in 1998, right after the how it feels record was released. i
didn't have it yet. it was, to say the least, a religious experience. so
obviously i was excited to hear that the band was recording a live record.
i
didn't go to the show but the record was good. until i remembered how
amazing sunny day is when they are playing in front of your very eyes. dan
was fantastic as usual, very gracious and genuinely appreciative of the
crowd, which kind of disappointed me. i thought the crowd could have done
better, but i wasn't making any noise either. i was just transfixed. jeremy
was quiet but very full of passion. they played a lot of songs from the
rising tide. snibe and the rising tide were fantastic, but i to admit that
they have a knack for taking you down (guitar and video games) and then
knocking you right off your feet (killed by an angel) and of course, the
ocean was beautiful.
perfect, that's all i want to say.
